The World Environment Day (WED) is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. It is an annual event which is celebrated on 5th June every year. It is the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment met at Stockholm, Sweden from 5–16 June 1972 . The first WED was on 1973.
WED was celebrated as a UN day until in the late 80’s when a number of countries domesticated this event. Tanzania is no exception thus every year joins other UN members to celebrate WED as both a global and national event.
The global theme for WED 2013 is 'THINK-EAT-SAVE' , which in Kiswahili implies 'FIKIRI-KULA; HIFADHI MAZINGIRA' .
The national theme for WED 2013 is 'FIKIRI KABLA YA KULA; HIFADHI MAZINGIRA.' Nationally this event is marked at Sumbawanga in Rukwa Region on 5th June 2013.
